Direction: facing south or south-east, for 6–8 hours of direct sun. Mount to a wall or building, not a pole. Bat Conservation International advises against pole-mounting single-chamber houses — smaller houses hold a steady temperature less well, and poles are for multi-chamber houses. Never the trunk of a shade tree. Clearance: keep branches, wires and other predator perches 20–25 ft away. Water: within about a quarter mile of a stream, pond or lake if you can.
