About this item

Owl Box — Attract Wild Owls to Your Backyard The WildYard Owl Box gives Eastern Screech Owls, Northern Saw-Whet Owls, and Boreal Owls a safe, weatherproof nesting cavity — replicating the natural tree hollows they depend on. Once installed, owls provide silent, chemical-free rodent control every single night. Built for Real Owls Interior cavity sized for small-to-medium owls (screech, saw-whet, boreal) Thick cedar construction — natural insulation keeps chicks warm in spring Rough-sawn interior for grip — owlets need traction to develop and fledge Front entry hole sized to exclude larger predators Sloped roof sheds rain; ventilation gap prevents summer overheating Mounting hardware included Natural Rodent Control A pair of screech owls raises 3–5 owlets per year and hunts mice, voles, shrews, and large insects nightly. One owl family can eliminate hundreds of rodents per season — no traps, no poison, no effort on your part. Where & How to Mount Your Owl Box Height: 10–15 feet above the ground. Higher placements reduce predator risk and increase occupancy rates. Location: Mount on a pole, tree, or side of a shed near open fields, meadows, or wooded edges. Owls need open hunting ground nearby. Direction: Face the entry hole away from prevailing winds. In northern climates, southeast-facing works well. Avoid: High-traffic areas, bright outdoor lights, and spots with heavy branch cover directly below the entry hole (predator access). Owl Box FAQ Which owl species will use this box? This box is sized for Eastern Screech Owls, Northern Saw-Whet Owls, and Boreal Owls. These are the most common backyard owl species across North America. Barn owls require a larger, different-style box. How long until owls move in?Owls scout new cavities in late winter and early spring. Put your owl box up by February for the best chance at first-season occupancy. Some customers see results in year one; others in year two. Patience pays off. Do I need a permit? No permit is required to install an owl box. Attracting owls to nest on your property is legal and encouraged. Screech owls and saw-whet owls are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but a nest box is not regulated. How do I clean the owl box?Clean once per year after the nesting season ends (typically September–October). Remove old nest material and owl pellets, wipe the interior with a diluted bleach solution (1:9 ratio), let dry fully before rehanging. Do not clean during active nesting. Can squirrels take over the box?Yes — squirrels sometimes claim owl boxes before owls arrive. If squirrels move in, remove their nesting material in early winter (before owl scouting begins) and consider adding a metal predator guard to the mounting pole. Should I add nesting material?Add 2–3 inches of wood shavings (not sawdust) to the floor of the box. Screech owls don't build nests — they use existing material. Pine or cedar shavings work well. My owl box has been up for two years and nothing has moved in — what now?Check: (1) Is it getting enough sun or is it too shaded? (2) Is there open hunting ground nearby? (3) Is there a light source nearby? (4) Is the entry hole blocked or warped? Relocating the box a short distance sometimes makes the difference.
