Discover how advanced musicologists and audio engineers are shaping the future of generative artificial intelligence at Turing.
Artificial intelligence has evolved far beyond basic text generation and numerical computation. Today, generative models are increasingly tasked with understanding creative arts, cultural nuance, complex music theory, and audio production workflows. However, before an AI system can accurately analyze a musical score, dissect harmonic structures, or evaluate contemporary production trends, it must learn from seasoned musical scholars and industry professionals.
Turing—based in San Francisco, California—stands as the world’s leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced artificial intelligence systems. By connecting top-tier subject matter experts with cutting-edge AI labs, Turing builds the foundational human intelligence layer that allows models to reason, create, and perform reliably.
About the Role: What Does a Music Domain Expert Do?
As a Music Domain Expert at Turing, your primary responsibility is evaluating and improving Large Language Models (LLMs) across diverse musical disciplines. You will design challenging prompts, assess factual accuracy and reasoning, and identify deep knowledge gaps within music theory, genres, composers, artists, production techniques, and instrumentation.
Your work directly impacts how artificial intelligence comprehends human creativity, ensuring that future technological systems respect historical accuracy, musicological principles, and professional industry standards.
Key Responsibilities & Scope of Work:
- Advanced Prompt Creation: Design sophisticated prompts covering music theory, composition, genres, artists, and audio production instruments.
- Model Evaluation: Assess AI-generated responses for factual accuracy, reasoning quality, completeness, and nuanced interpretation.
- Error Detection: Identify hallucinations, logical inconsistencies, outdated information, and edge cases in model outputs.
- Benchmark Development: Build comprehensive benchmark datasets and adversarial test cases to challenge AI limits.
- Evidence-Based Feedback: Provide authoritative, well-researched feedback backed by reliable musicological references.
Are You a Fit? Required Skills & Qualifications
This role is designed for dedicated music professionals who combine academic rigor with practical industry insight. To succeed in this engagement, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Background: Master’s degree or higher in any field, with a strong preference for degrees in Music, Music Theory, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Music Education, Music Production, Audio Engineering, or Performing Arts.
- Domain Mastery: Comprehensive knowledge of music theory, composition, historical eras, genres, composers, artists, notation, and modern production techniques.
- Professional Experience: 3+ years of relevant professional experience in music education, performance, composition, journalism, research, content creation, or audio engineering.
- Analytical Rigor: Excellent written English, research skills, and exceptional attention to detail when evaluating complex musical data.
A Day in the Life of a Turing Music Expert
A typical workday combines deep analytical research, creative prompt engineering, and rigorous qualitative assessment. You might spend your morning designing adversarial test cases that challenge an AI's understanding of counterpoint or modal jazz harmony. In the afternoon, you evaluate model outputs, dissecting whether the system correctly attributes historical musical developments or accurately explains mixing and mastering workflows.
You collaborate closely with AI researchers to calibrate task complexity, maintaining meticulous documentation and high annotation standards.
Perks of Working with Turing
Collaborating with Turing offers unique career advantages for forward-thinking professionals:
- Cutting-Edge Exposure: Work at the absolute frontier of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning research.
- Global Collaboration: Engage with world-class AI researchers, data scientists, and elite subject matter experts.
- Professional Flexibility: Enjoy a fully remote contractor setup that respects your expertise and autonomous workflow.
Engagement Details & Stability
This is an 8-week remote contractor assignment requiring a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week, with a requirement of at least 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Standard Time (PST). To ensure long-term stability and unlock access to ongoing, advanced tasks within the platform, experts are advised to seamlessly complete the onboarding process and successfully log their initial 10 hours of work.
The Interview & Onboarding Process
Turing maintains a streamlined yet rigorous evaluation pipeline to identify top talent:
